Overcoming Terror
Apr 01, 2017How do you feel when people cheer your work?
If you love that too much, you're in trouble.
Why?
Because what happens when they DON'T like your work?
:(
EXACTLY.

You need a replacement plan for your addiction to praise.
When you are standing in front of a group of people, your mouth dry, terror in your heart and wondering "Will they like me? Will I do well tonight?" that's when you pull out your replacement plan: a list of things you must do to meet your own standard.
Here's 9 things I use to decide if I am successful:
- Start on time
- Do something new
- Listen more than I talk
- Admit when I am wrong
- Scan the room every minute
- Most time on student requests
- A group activity every 60 minutes
- I get my hands on every one of them
- I have an agenda that is fulfilled by lessons
My list is a lot longer, but those 9 are key.
You see, once you have that list - you don't have to care if others praise you or not.
You don't live to THEIR standard, you live to YOUR standard.
When you notice you are wondering what they think of you, it's time to start wondering what you think of you? For that, you need a set of standards. Then it's easy to judge if you did well or not.
Praise me or hate me, it makes no difference: my list is my judge.
Have you got that list?
