Overcoming Your Obstacles
Oct 30, 2019Helen Keller was born blind.
She was also deaf, and because of that, unable to speak. Yet she also became the first deaf & blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Nelson Mandala was imprisoned for 27 years.
He went on to serve as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 and became beloved by black and white alike.
Mahatma Gandhi never held political office.
He became the pre-eminent political and ideological leader of India during Indian independence. He led his people politically by sheer moral authority.
What is common about these people?
They overcame impossible obstacles. They lived to see their impossible dream come true.
Henry Ford, the founder of Ford Motor Cars, once said:
"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal."
Last email I wrote that dreams are crushed by obstacles. It is easy to dream, but overcoming obstacles is your real work.
What is your biggest obstacle?
As Ford said – it's thinking you have an obstacle! Do your obstacles defeat you? FM's story is about a man who never gave up. His obstacles were peculiar to his passion, whereas most of us have more mundane obstacles...
Like: I have no money.
Or: I must keep my job.
Or: I am not smart enough
Or: Something is wrong with me.
What are your obstacles?
Write them down, as many as you can. Have fun getting them all out! So what now? Look at your obstacles. Which ones are fact? How do you know it is a fact? Do your friends agree? Does everyone agree? No one disputes a fact - except the current occupant of the White House - people will dispute an opinion. So are your obstacles all facts, or are they your opinions? Obstacles that seem insurmountable seem that way because of your opinion. As Mandala said:
"It seems impossible until it is done."
So the real obstacle is not the obstacle outside you; it is the obstacle inside you! Look at your obstacles again:
1. mark those that are facts (we all agree with you)
2. mark those that are opinions (we do not all agree with you)
What do you have left? Lots of facts? Or lots of opinions?
If you can find one person, who thinks differently about your "fact", then you know your so-called fact is just your opinion!
Bad news: Facts cannot be changed. (Fact: the sun is hot) Good news: Opinions can be changed. (Opinion: the sun is too hot).
In ThinkingBody Online, you explore how Alexander's process is another way undo your opinion by gathering information, analyzing and experimenting with opposing directions...
Why is the sun too hot? The sun is exactly how it is, neither too hot nor too cool. Your opinion is that the sun is too hot, but the sun does not care about your opinion!
This process is simple. It is straightforward to do. Once you realize it is your opinion, it starts losing its power as an obstacle.
You may ask: "If it is so easy, why aren't I doing it?"
That is a great question.
Clues abound in my next email when I share with you a hidden discovery that changed my friend Peter's life.
It is this kind of exploration that you can explore with your Self and your students through the Compass in ThinkingBody Online. Registration closes in a few hours.
