Picasso Scorned the Easy and the Quick

National Geographic are into their second season of "Genius" - the first season on Einstein was riveting - this time round they tackle the life of Pablo Picasso.

As I watch the season - with Antonio Banderas brilliantly playing the later day icon - it's emerging how much passion, dedication and sheer grit went into making Picasso the artist of renown we have today.

Art - according to Picasso - is not for the light-hearted or confused.

It's a mission, and it must override all else. That means - ALL.

I think Alexander's discovery requires almost the same level of unreasonable determination - why else pursue something that most fail at making a success?

There's a Picasso story I heard - and I can't remember its origins now - but I loved it enough to remember the details…

Some friends of Picasso wanted to impress him with their commitment to the artist - so they purchased one of his works at great cost, hung it in their dining room, then promptly asked him over for dinner.

As he sat down for dinner they said - "Look Pablo, we have your painting."

Picasso took a cursory look and replied: "It's a fake."

They were devastated, apologetic and nothing more was said.

However, his rich patrons did not give up. This time, they carefully establish provenance - authenticating it was an original work from his studio. They replaced the "fake" with the new original, and again invited Pablo for dinner.

This time - confident of its authenticity - they proudly showed it to Picasso.

Again Picasso gave it a quick look, and muttered: "It's a fake."

This time his friends were ready, they pounced with their provenance to assure Picasso it was his original work.

Picasso smiled.

"Oh yes, I painted it," he explained "but 90% of what I paint is fake."

What a standard to live up to!
