Playing Detective with Posture

"My right shoulder just started to hurt, here…"

And the short man rubbed his upper arm and neck.

The scene is of one trainee helping another – as I watched - in BodyChance's Pro class yesterday in Osaka.

A therapist may analyse where you are sore, even give you some specific instructions for the shoulder. They could do some massage, offer you an exercise or two, and do some treatment to relieve the pain.

Instead of that, an Alexscovery teacher can play detective...

Teacher: "So what have you been doing that is new since your upper-arm* started hurting?"

Why does the Alexscovery teacher ask this question?

Arms don't get painful without a cause.

If pain is the crime, then cause is the thief. Who stole away your peace? 

The student considers the question for a long time but cannot find an answer.

"No, I didn't start anything new."

(never give up)

"How about work? Did you get busy?"

"Hmmm... Yes, it was quite busy last week."

Alleluia! 

"What is your work?" the teacher asks.

"I have to pack then lift up a heavy box like this..." and the student demonstrates: picking a box off the floor, turning to the right and lifting up 15kg to put it on a high shelf.

"Wait," remarks the teacher, "Are you always turning to the right?"

A light dawns in the eye of the student. He smiles. It has become apparent.

Always turning to the right while his arm was having to push up a 15kg box was a good reason for any arm to complain.

The remainder of the lesson was creating a new movement plan that distributed the effort through his whole system, instead of stressing out one part of his arm.

And now the pain is handled for good.

No more therapy, no exercise, no treatments.

Just brain power and common sense.
