Remarkable Discoveries About Frozen “50-Year Old” Shoulders

Apr 07, 2021

It happened about two hours after my unprecedented 40-minute lesson with Marj.

Marjorie Barstow (1899-1995) – my precious teacher - had never previously given me a direct touch lesson longer than 5 mins! Even so, at its immediate end, I could not say the sun was shinning out of my primary control (head/spine relationship).

Two hours later, I was standing at the back of the theatre in the Rudolf Steiner House in Marylebone, London, while Marj was teaching on the stage. Suddenly there was an explosion and mayhem. It was terrifying – there was noise, flashing and overwhelming feelings coursed through me as I watched everyone else.

Yet those a mere metre away were blithely unaware of what had just happened!

The explosion was in me, in my arm; more specifically at the region of my glenohumeral joint. What I had once experienced as a dull ache had just instantly transformed into a cacophony of bluster and light.

I COULD FEEL MY ARM AGAIN.

And it was in total chaos and confusion.

And it was an exquisite, almost divine experience.

The proprioceptive richness of information spewing forth from that area of my Self contrasted dramatically with the vague, constantly aching and dull experience I had been having previously.

I realised all at once how little my arm knew about itself.

Your arm is a marvel of modern engineering. Barbara Conable – during a lecture at an ATI Conference - once shared an anecdote about a group of scientists at Columbia University who tried to express mathematically the biomechanical forces that were active in maintaining your arm’s relationship to the spine/torso. After 9 pages of closely type equations, they gave up. It was too complex.

Now I understood why.

I also began to have a glimmer of finally recognising why Marj often remarked to students:

“We know nothing about this area.”

I was not “cured” by any means. But I was awake to the problem; and as anyone knows who has dealt with addiction, the first breakthrough step is recognising the problem. I realised my muscles no longer knew what they were supposed to do. By pushing and pulling against each other, my muscles had been “locked” in a perpetual tug-of-war. This war had finally stalemated - or “frozen” - into a cold, indifferent and sensorily impoverished condition of immobile pain.

Marj had woken that area up.

But Marj wasn’t finished with me yet, not by a long shot.

After the London workshop, we headed to Switzerland, where her famous blue-dagger eyes were going to exact another pound of flesh from my slowly shrinking Alexander-ego.

My shrinking Alexander ego is on display in the second course of ThinkingBody Online. I extracted these insights over an excruciating two years because I tried to align my story with Alexander’s story, with your story – we are universal and similar at our core.
