Sitting is the new Smoking - Will Anyone Agree?
Mar 02, 2018Posture never cuts it in the same way that diet and exercise captivate people's attention.
Compared to smoking, sitting is as innocent as Mary's little lamb.
Does anyone believe that sitting is the new smoking?
Instead, diets - what to eat, when to eat, how to eat - are hugely popular. So are systems that offer "exercise". Whether it's 'radio exercises' in Japan, Pilates, Yoga, Gym training or Cross Country - people everywhere are chasing fitness choices in their effort to be healthy.
But mention "posture" and people simplistically sit up straight and ask: "You mean like this?"
Eyes up. Small internal groan.
Sitting in front of a computer is a societal epidemic of softly-irritated people having to cope with continuous discomfort, while ignorant to its hidden influence on their energy and enthusiasm. That's the Corporate story for Alexander teachers. And it's not pretty.
Workers don't write "long sitting at the computer" as a problem of any significance in workplace feedback forms. It's not on their radar as a factor in their stress.
Which in turn makes it really hard to sell that idea to HR people.
Instead workers tell HR about their mental stress - relationships in the workplace, pressures in their work, feeling they work too hard for too little.
Do you know how to connect their "how of sitting" to their "sense of mental stress"? Can you demonstrate - in a way that gets into their guts - that posture is not a side dish, but the actual main meal?
My London workshop on getting Corporate work tackles these challenges. https://bodychance.mykajabi.com/p/london1803workshop
How do you build an Alexander-derived service that logically addresses concerns around mental stress?
One side of it is markeaching - seeing your job not merely as a teacher, but as an active advocate of a new way to think.
It requires you to develop alternate teaching technologies.
In Japan, we recently landed our first contract - we have an opportunity over the next 6 months to work with 30~50 staffs in a Call Centre. It's a pilot study, an opportunity to prove that Alexander's discovery can be the main meal in challenging intractable workplace problems.
On my two day workshop in London - and later Online - I will be showing you how.
Big doors swing on small hinges - come find out about those small hinges.
