Splat ! Splat ! or THUMP!! THUMP!!
Aug 08, 2019After a Chancer Daily about my regular morning run along Meguro river, Malcolm dropped me a line to say:
***
"When you run try and think splat (Landing foot gets longer and wider!!) on the landing rather than thump thump!! Just saying.

ROGER THAT.
Malcolm Balk is like the next generation of one of my Alexander trainers – Paul Collins. Paul was a remarkable teacher – although born in London, he was a Canadian native - and hey! So is Malcolm.
What is it about Canada, Alexander and running?
Paul represented Canada at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952. Later in life – using his knowledge of Alexander discoveries – Jean M. O. Fischer writes that Paul established ten new veteran world records for endurance events beyond the marathon: 100 miles, 200 miles, 300 miles, 400 miles, and for 24 hours, 48 hours and six days.
He was also a prodigy of the violin, studying at both Julliard and Yale before coming back to London for more at the Guildhall School of Music.
Quite a guy – and I had no idea of all this while I was training with him in the late 1970s.
Super-charging knowledge you already have is a consistent theme with people who find Alexander's discovery later in life. Many accomplished and talented people take the step to launch a second career as Alexscovery Teachers – my version of AT – and go on to pioneer in their original professions.
It's a noble career.
We welcome people like that at BodyChance. If you come to one of our Golden Week residentials in May – they happen every year, start planning! – expect to meet many accomplished people.
There are currently 116 trainees in BodyChance, and they have skills in
martial arts, fitness, singing, musicianship, yoga, Pilates, athletics, sports. There are amateurs and professionals alike, teachers and novices, old and young. Currently, our youngest trainee is 20, and our oldest approaching 80!
You'll never meet such a diverse group of Japanese any other way but coming to BodyChance's annual residential. Make this trip a personal exploration of people, rather than a humdrum touristy thing.
And hey! You can do both.
