Tadpole Waggling Show

Jul 05, 2019

If human movement was an R & D Project of a large corporation - it has already been in research for 550 million years.

That's how long ago a few cells first clustered together - with a string of fibres hanging down like a chord – to electrify its tadpole waggle towards the most likely place to find food. This is how the Chordates began - to which all birds, reptiles, fish and mammals belong.

And the Sea Squirt was one of the earliest Chordates.

She lived a double life. First, like the tadpole waggling creature described above, she searched for the floor of the ocean to put down her roots and stay there for life. Once settled – an never to move again – she no longer needed a nervous system. So what did she do?

She then ate her own brain, dangling chord and all.

She had now become a plant again. Never to move again.

A sentient being is a moving being. To say "I move" is another way to say "I feel" or, "I think".

When you don't move, you don't think. There is not one plant anywhere that has a Central Nervous System. Brains are exclusively the domain of moving creatures.

If you're a regular reader of my Posture Daily – then you know this. I say it all the time:

Postural Movement is Paramount.

Before breathing, digesting, circulating blood, exercising, being creative – or anything else – how you move head, spine and limbs is the primary factor that determines your well-being.

This being the case – you'd think everyone would be rushing off to improve their posture.

Well, people do try. People do have a vague sense that it is necessary. The problem is: no-one has a clue about how to transform their posture genuinely. Most of the advice available today is in the Stone Ages. They rely on brute force – imposing postural solutions that are unsubtle, overbearing and ultimately ineffective.

There is another way – this is what Alexander discovered. You start with that brain inside your head, then think about how it is influencing your spine, then think about how head/spine together is controlling your arms, legs and breathing.

It's not that difficult to understand – it is challenging to implement.

Even more challenging is developing a teaching methodology that captures the imagination of short span students with digitally crafted brains. That’s the constant challenge at BodyChance – developing an effective teaching technology for our modern times.

Next year in May – at BodyChance’s Golden Week Residential – you have a chance to study, enjoy Japan and meet a vast new Alexander community that will eventually influence the world of Alexander in profound and unseen ways. Japan is quite a trip – no-one regrets coming. The residential is transformation, just as our work.

If you are looking for a refresh and a recharge, nothing can do it for you like the Japanese experience of Alexander’s discovery. Only three spots available – just write to me if you’re interested. Our 2020 guests are Lucia Walker and Sharyn West. Reply to this email and I will get it.

Here’s the link to a short and long video we made of one of our weeks together:
