Teenage Dream

Oct 05, 2017

I spent tonight watching teenagers waking up.

My daughter Grace convinced me to fund her doing a weekend "Empower U" course designed for kids between 12 and 18, but mostly 15 and 16yo boys and girls.

The program gave 47 of our beach-going smart-phone viewing local youth training in goal setting, leadership, team building, creative thinking, communication, money management, problem solving and career success.

All in 28 hours.

Phew!

And now we parents are all lined up, listening to our little darlings tell us how much their lives have been changed, how powerful this is, and…

"Can we go on the $3,840 camp please daddy?"

I expected it. However, how you change lives without commitment? I told Grace:

"You want to do this camp sweetheart? You pay half."

That stopped her in her tracks.

And bless her heart, she started doing the sums.

Your students are the same. If they want your lessons, they will start doing the sums. You don't need to worry about that, let them worry about that.

You can charge money for need, greed or righteousness, but the best reason is to charge money to motivate the student. Consider it part of your teaching.

My teacher Marj had a similar insight. She saw that playing music was more fun for a musician than getting in and out of chairs. There was more at stake when they played, which meant they paid attention, got more out of the lesson.

Next time you tell a student what your lesson costs…

SHUT UP.

Don't apologise, make excuses, giggle or look embarrassed.

Just be silent while they digest the information.
