The Ace in the Hole

Oct 03, 2019

Winning at anything feels great.

We use it like a drug, to motivate our Self to keep going.

But what happens when you keep losing?

What happens when depression, anxiety and paralysis are the order of the day? That is the real test. That is when you find out if your passion is real or fake. Whatever your passion is, can you sustain it in the face of continued failure?

The biggest success stories are always chock full of failure.

First things first: having an obsession – a healthy obsession – is a gift from above. (An unhealthy obsession is a gift from below!).

Healthy obsessions, by definition, improve your condition. For example – musicians, to succeed, really need to be obsessed. To practice every day, to spend years on the same activity – this is an incredible achievement.

And there’s lots of evidence to show that this develops you cognitively. I haven’t seen any research, but I would predict – based on other research – that the incidence of dementia in ageing musicians is less than in other Professions.

Why? Because it’s about thinking about your physical movements.

I think that’s why musicians love Alexander’s Discovery. Musicians love getting even more obsessed with their music playing by realising that their Posture is a second instrument they have to explore.

And the second instrument is way more complicated and interesting that the primary instrument that creates the sound – YOU!

When you lose motivation for whatever you do – be it music or any other hobby – making your Self the object of study wakes your passion up all over again.

It’s like going back to the excitement that first got you started.

And how do you do that?

You start thinking more deeply about teaching – both your Self, and Others. FM’s obsession was first with teaching himself, then with teaching others.

In ThinkingBody Online, I use the famous Enneagram – which I call ‘The Compass’ to understand teaching in a fresh way. How that works is explained at the link below.

Time can tend to flatten passion, but ThinkingBody Online gives a new spin to it all. This month I am taking 40% off course, and offering access to me through the exclusive ThinkingBody Facebook group. Use this coupon after clicking on Purchase.
