The Amazing Thing (not) About Awareness – Part I
Dec 08, 2019This is not science; this is Chancer's own empiricism.
First, THE SPURIOUS PROBLEM (which means not the real problem)
When it comes to being aware, one of the most common complaints you hear is: I don't remember. Or "I keep forgetting to include my... legs/arms/head etc." Or "I know what I am supposed to do – I just can't remember to do it" or some such troffle.
Second, THE SPURIOUS SOLUTION (which means not a real solution)
Just remember!
How many times have you been told that?
Well sweetheart, you don't need to remember. The problem is not memory.
Third, THE REAL PROBLEM
Lack of recognition.
Means – lack of awareness to recognise what you need to react to.
Recognition is essential before any change can happen.
It is true at a cellular level – your respiratory system must recognise a high level of CO2 to trigger an in-breath for more of that delicious O2. It is true at a psychological level: A person must recognise that they have an addiction or problem – to stop being in "denial" about it – before they can embark on the journey to be free of their addiction.
Fourth, THE REAL SOLUTION
Wait. Follow my story first...
I discovered this via my legs.
My legs went through a rather harrowing life event – they were tied up above me while I lay on a bed. I was left like that 24 hours a day for three continuous months. It was an ordeal that left many scars.
I did not want to recognise my legs.
I was in a hospital, and that procedure saved my life - because I had suffered 3rd-degree burns. My legs needed to be immobilised while my skin grafts took hold.
But try explaining that to a 2-year-old – which was my age at the time.
I was happy to ignore my legs for a long, long time after that.
Once I started my Alexander training, I realised I needed a relationship with my legs again. I'd keep trying to remember then, then promptly forget them again — this went on for years.
How I finally recognised my legs, and the remarkable way I discovered them is the subject for my next email.
My story is also the story of BodyThinking – how functional anatomy led me to transform my knowledge of my Self.
Until December 31st, you can purchase permanent access to my BodyThinking Online course. In BodyThinking Online, you will find tools you need to march into the depths of your coordination; i.e. into the depths of your whole Self.
This is what is on offer:
- the full BodyThinking Online course on Functional Anatomy that we offer to our Pro trainees: giving you an in-depth ability to analyse and transform your movements.
- Three opportunities to get live individual coaching from me online: problem-solve those tricky situations that seem to keep re-appearing.
- view Online my one-day BodyThinking workshop which distils BodyThinking into practical, energy-saving methods, showing you how you can communicate with your Self and students (if you have them).
- watch Associate Director Greg Holdaway's Supersize BodyThinking into the everyday problems of musicians, performers, salary workers and other folks over three evenings.
All this has never been available together before; I may not offer it like this again. To read more about the course, and purchase before December 31st, go to this link:
