The Book FM Should Have Written

Robert B. Cialdini's book - "Influence: Science and Practice" - is an almost perfect complement to FM's wild evolutionary theories, expressed most thoroughly in CCCI.

FM went on and on about "subconscious behaviour" and how much that governs us - regardless of what we believe.

FM was 100% right about that, and Cialdini has produced the evidence.

It's taken society a wee longer to catch up to FM, but these days neuro-scientists get it. The rest of us are still little breathless about the whole concept…

However, Cialdini - as an empirical social scientist - went out in the world, got his mouth dirty practising, and proved this stuff. Read the entertaining result of all his fieldwork: "Influence" - now it's into its 5th Edition.

Next, read FM's CCCI Part I: remarkable for its prescience, if not its style.

In Cialdini's book he showed - over and over again - how much of our behaviour was being unconsciously triggered by "click - whur" routines; of which we had no awareness. We behave in easily predictable ways, despite believing the opposite.

FM on that:

"All the damned fools in the world believe they are actually doing what they think they are doing."

One tiny example (taken from the book)…

You rush up and ask: "Can I go to the front of the line?"

A majority of people will refuse it. Proved by multiple trials.

Do it again - different group, multiple trials - and this is what happens:

You rush up and ask: "Can I go to the front because I need to go to the front?"

They say: "Yes, ok."

What? !!!

There is a statistically significant increase in the affirmative response. In all tests.

Because of the "because…" It's that simple.
