The Man Who Ate His Head for Breakfast

You are not designed to spend a good part of your day looking down at your tummy.

And yet, I met a man who did mostly that.

I was working backstage at a theatre in London in the late 70s - yes, THAT long ago - when I met him: his posture was so rounded that he looked like his head was consuming his body for breakfast.

When I told him I was in London to do the 3-year training as an Alexscovery Teacher, he got curious.

"3 years?" he remarked in a strong Cornish accent. "Maybe you can help with my stomach?"

"What's wrong with it?"

It was a perfunctory question because I already had a pretty good guess at what was wrong.

"The doctors don't know what's wrong," he replied, "they stuck a tube down me throat, but they can't find nothing wrong."

Inside, I wanted to whistle, laugh and scream all at the same time: THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT'S WRONG!!!??? Have they got eyes?

"If I did to my tummy - what you are doing to your tummy - I'm only surprised it took this long for a problem to show up."

He looked back at me blankly…

"What am I doing?"

Could it be I am a simpleton?

Medical diagnosis is in the stone ages when it comes to correlating neuro-muscular co-ordination to dysfunctional health conditions of the digestive tract. Yet I can point to my students who lost stomach aches, sorted out piles, reduced constipation and generally got healthier from doing no more than changing the way they co-ordinate head-to-spine in their daily lives.

Every AT teacher's practice is full of stories like these.

It's not just a health problem; it's an identity crisis. My theatrical friend was his posture - it means: the two mixed together into a seamless whole. Changing his posture meant changing his identity. Was he ready for that?
