The Most Chilling Political Manipulation In Modern History

Trinidad is the Southernmost island-nation of the glorious Caribbean.

It was also the setting for one of the most chilling political manipulations in modern history. 

We imagine political campaigns are directly about getting people to vote, but Netflix’s documentary “The Great Hack” tells the story of how Cambridge Analytica concluded that all they had to do was get young people NOT to vote.

Achieve that with the Afro-Caribbean youth in Trinidad, then the opposing party would slip through to victory - and that is exactly how it played out. The youth vote dropped by a staggering 40%, and swung the election to Cambridge Analytica’s client by 6%.

Political victory by the hands of big data’s grip on social media, so-called ‘fake news.’ 

It was Cambridge Analytica’s rehearsal for its secretive role in Brexit and Trump’s victories. As the Washington Post headlined it on November 11th, 2016: “107,000 votes in three states effectively decided the election.”

The chilling part in Trinidad is how a youthful & innocent Caribbean community – and the media – could be so easily duped by Cambridge Analytica’s puppeteering social media campaign. As one of their Directors put it during a secretly recorded sales pitch:

“We just put information into the bloodstream in the internet.”

Kids were creating dances, making YouTube videos, wearing T-Shirts, organising festivals - even graffitiing “Do So” on the wall of the Prime Minister’s house!
