The Secret of Successful Teachers
Apr 03, 2018A common idea among Alexscovery teachers is that if you improve your teaching skills, you will attract more students.
Hmm… Really?
How many good teachers do you know that struggle to find students?
And yet, courses abound at Congresses, through Societies, on the Internet - all part of "Continuing Education" to improve you as a teacher for…
For what?
To teach obviously.
And hey! Important Notice!
TO TEACH YOU NEED STUDENTS.
Duh.
Somewhere along the line, all the people running these courses seemed to forget this inconvenient fact.
(Maybe it's because they haven't got any students, so they are making a buck out of you instead. Can't accuse me of that - I've got 126 trainees in my school.)
It amused me in London two years ago to notice the different popularity of my two one day courses. One I called: "How to Teach Groups." The other I called: "How to Find Students."
Guess which one got the most registrations?
And that wasn't what amused me. The real surprise was that the majority of teachers - who turned up for my "How to Teach Groups" workshop - wanted to know how to find students.
What?!
Yep, they went to the wrong course.
Because they believed that better teaching attracts more students.
Now don't get me wrong. Teaching quality is extremely important. Just this weekend I prepared a survey to send out to my 126 trainees asking feedback on the teaching quality of my six full-time teaching staff.
Quality matters, no question.
But quality is not what attract students, although it helps to keep them. (And even that is questionable, and that's another email.)
Doing more and more courses to improve your ability to teach - so you'll attract more students - is like being in a desert dying of thirst, and spending all your time making a beautiful cup.
What you need to do is look for water.
And that is what I am offering in my "Getting Work in Alexander Corporations" course starting in May. A chance to fill your practice - so you can actually practice all those wonderful ways of teaching that you spent so much money to learn.
Frankly - if it's a choice between going to the Congress to learn more about teaching, or doing my course, so you have students to practice with - it's an obvious choice for a clear-thinking person.
Students improve the teacher, not courses.
This course is about getting students.
