The Things That Don't Exist are the Most Difficult to get Rid Of
Oct 20, 2017The subject of this email was one of FM's aphorisms. What does it mean?
Well, our world is full of things that don't exist. You for a start.
But I won't go there, not today. Instead of looking for you, let's look for Seattle.
Where is Seattle?
Go on, point it out to me. You can't. There's nothing real, nothing that exists solely as Seattle. Where does it end? At the border? Can you see the border?
"The border runs along here," he says, and I am looking at a road, some trees, and a telegraph pole.
"Where?" I ask "I can't see a border anywhere."
A border is a concept, just like Seattle is a concept.
It's all a fairytale.
As it turns out, so are most things human. We live in a world of fairytales. Cities are fairytales. Countries are fairytales. Companies are fairytales. Our world is fiction - an elaborate labyrinth of deceptions and falsehoods that combine cleverly together to convince us that Seattle exists.
FM was on to this.
He coined the term 'end-gaining.' Endgainers react to a non-existent future as though it already existed. Not far from insanity if you really consider it.
Yet - every day - you will at some time use an imaginary future to distort your present. And it may not be a bad thing; it's just a little insane. It's hard to imagine living in a world with no future, aside from the fact that we already do.
Since our cognitive functions started to produce a fairytale world of cities and countries, of companies and economies, of myths and legends - we have been using the future to terrify our present.
The agriculturalists started it - the next crop, tomorrow's weather, the coming storm - and today it is way out of control: a world of spin doctors and TED videos telling us the narratives we should adopt.
FM knew that mastering this human ability was the cornerstone of sanity, yet the cognitive aspects of his adventure seem lost in the physicality of coordinating movements.
In ThinkingBody Module Two I segue back into this cognitive world. How do the ideas that drive your "Use of the Self" create the things that don't exist?
And how do you get rid of the things that don't exist?
ThinkingBody Module Two.
