The Truth About Nerves
Jul 24, 2017Some people would prefer cancer to speaking in front of others!
And part of their problem is believing that they should be feeling calm.
Well – here's a secret to share with them: there is nothing relaxing about speaking in front of people! What would you think of a baseball player who walked lazily on the pitch, arms hanging toneless and loose, seemingly unconcerned about his game?
Sports people understand that tension is a positive.
Your jitters will support you to focus. Unless of course you keep distracting your Self with the useless task of thinking: "I should not be feeling so nervous!"
The plain truth is this: when you speak in front of people, YOU NEED ENERGY!
There's nothing calm about speaking in front of others…
People focus is on you. You are giving a performance. Even at dinner with friends – if you are telling them a story – you are performing. You feel "nervous" because you need to be on edge. Your system is trying to help you. Yet you keep asking for the opposite to happen – "I have to calm down."
Calm?!!! No. It's crazy.
Talk to any performer and they will tell: performance is exhausting.
What is the feeling of being "nervous" any how?
Take a moment to consider what is actually happening:
Your heart starts to pump the blood to do new things…
1. Blood is moved away from digestion into muscles
2. Blood is making available more nutrients for your muscles
3. Blood is quickly distributing hormones around your body
4. Hormones are creating more alertness and readiness to act
(You are being flooded with drugs that are making you into a "super-hero"!!!
Didn't you always want to be a super-hero???)
5. Your brain is waking up – you are more alert, attentive and aware of things.
So there is a natural physiological process taking place. This is normal. This is correct.
If a teacher ever tells you to be calm while performing, please run screaming from the room.
A lot of this is part of ThinkingBody, opening soon.
