The Wonder of Arms
Nov 16, 2019Do you believe you could solve
a long-term arm problem
in just a few minutes?
Two nights ago I was working
with a musician who told me
her arm gave her trouble
when she raised it in the air.
It was obvious to me
why her arm hurt.
She was confused
about how her rib cage
and arm were designed
to work together.
Many musicians have this confusion.
Not just musicians, but office workers,
homemakers, dancers & performers –
so many people are confused
by their body structure.
Actually, any professional person
sometimes need fresh ideas
(to flush out vague ones)
so that their work can be based on
anatomical and functional truth.
What did I teach that night?
Three things:
1. Your arm begins
at the base of your neck.
(You'd be surprised how
many people think it
begins at the shoulder's edge.)
2. The shoulder blade (scapula)
is part of your arm.
It is not part of your ribcage!
3. When you lean back,
it is the ribcage & spine
that is leaning back,
not your arm.
Your arm follows.
With my hands touching her,
I confirmed this information
As she made the movement again.
It was wonderful to see
the look of surprise
and disbelief when her
arm no longer hurt.
"Stekiiii!" she said. (It means – "Fantastic!")
