It's taken me this long to catch up with one of the great British novels.

Is it possible to swim in words?

To luxuriate, bathe and preen my Self over with Thackeray's delightful epithets of long gone vagabonds and vanities.

I found my Self - marking passages - and wanting to read them again and again out loud - marvelling at the construction and imagery Thackeray evoked.

Take this one, where he describes the hidden underbelly of vanity:

Those who like may peep down under waves that are pretty transparent, and see it writhing and twirling, diabolically hideous and slimy, flapping amongst bones, or curling round corpses;

Diabolically hideous and slimy - makes me think of Trump: tiny eyes like dead stumps of wood.
