Time Isn't Measured by Clocks

Jul 13, 2019

Peter Drucker wrote a beautiful book for people who manage others – "The Effective Executive."

What do you think he said comes top of the you-must-do list?

Priorities? NO
Focus? NO
Team? NO

And so on.

I doubt you can guess what he says come first?

I was certainly surprised…

Ducker revealed - from his experience - that most executives are clueless about how they use their time. What did you do yesterday? Can you even remember? How long on emails? How long for breakfast? How much time spent talking? How productive were you?

And so on. Now here's the most interesting part…

Alexander revealed that most people are clueless about their use of their Posture. So is there any connection between Drucker and Alexander's observations?

Yes, A LOT.

It comes down to perception.

Which are mostly fairy-tales. Our minds are full of fairy-tales about everything – time, Posture, relationships, money. The list is endless.

You doubt me? OK, try this little test.

Do you have a partner, friend or enemy who you believe is clueless about something? It's not hard to find that. You still can't understand why your partner keeps forgetting to put the cap on the toothpaste; or why your best friend keeps dating dreadful people (always the same type); or why the current Occupant of the White House…

And so on.

Our minds are full of beliefs that we take as being true, real, actual – when, in fact, they are perceptions manufactured by our brain to interpret the world. They are no more real than the opposite perception of your enemies.

Which is not to judge the morality of it – that's another issue.

It's about being in your head, rather than being here and now - which is all we have. Tomorrow, yesterday – they are all fairy-tales.

They don't exist except as constructs in our thinking.

How do you find reality then?

By analyzing what is happening right now. That's what Alexander's discovered, and that's what Drucker recommends you do: find out how you are using time.

At the Golden Week residential next year, you have a chance to explore alternate ways of teaching and speaking about the work. Every day results in roaring laughter or sweet tears.

It's the Theatre of the Real.

Consider a studying holiday in Japan next year during the first week of May – what the Japanese call Golden Week. Watch the video about it here:
