Tone It Up Johnny - You Need To Get It In !
Oct 25, 2017Johnny loves soccer, and you win by getting the ball under the net!
It takes effort, tension. Yesterday I wrote about people who add tension to make "good upright posture."
Michael Tilly, working at the Lyric Theatre in Illinois, had this to say:
***
I have to say I don't necessarily agree with this. Muscles work by tensing. What we need is eutony, or appropriate tension and span. In my experience with others and myself, tension in a "part" is sometimes due to flaccidity of other "parts" which need to be contributing to the "work" of balance.
Those people may be putting more tension in their body when they sit "upright", or they may be so habitually accustomed to the "tension" necessary to slump that they just don't register it.

No argument from the Chancer.
In fact, one of my favourite Alexscovery Teachers likes to startle her trainee audiences by declaring emphatically:
"Alexander is a Doing Technique"
And alleluia to THAT too.
What does it mean?
"Non-doing" is popular jargon amongst Alexdaphrodites, and TOTALLY misleading to Mr. John Smith - who really, really, really wants to hit the ball faster and farther next time.
How can you "non-do" something you want to do desperately? How insane is that?
Mind you, the Chancer is one of the worst offenders when it comes to bamboozling
poor Johnny, but that's just my wicked Self shining through.
Chancer the disrupter, Chancer the provoker, as in:
What is the sound of one hand clapping?
I love a good Zen koan, and THAT is the primary purpose of the expression 'non-doing.'
However, as utilitarian advice in a practical situation, it is, as Michael points out, against the truth. People need their tension, just appropriately so.
And how do you know when to bamboozle and when to reality check?
The psychology of teaching Alexander's discovery is a subject that has much to appeal to teachers getting sick of being pseudo-therapists; fixing up every painful back and headache that comes your way.
It's what I pursue - practically and with lots of advice on how - in my ThinkingBody Module Two, on a discount until November 30th.
No hurry, keep considering - or just buy it and start.
