Top-Down or Up-Lift – How Does Your Brain Work?

Aug 02, 2019

It's a curious thing, but top-down projections from our brain's cortical region (the smart part) are far more numerous than the signals that move up our cortical hierarchy.

From a little input, we reply with massive output.

As the Blakeslees' put it in their marvellous "The Body Has A Mind of Its Own" book:

***

Anatomists have found that in most areas of the cortex, for every fiber carrying information up the hierarchy, there are as many as ten fibers carrying processed information back down the hierarchy.

***

Our instructional set is top-down heavy.

And so is the way we live. Whether the two have any causal relationship is pure speculation, but it cannot be a coincidence that your beliefs tend to filter out any information that would jeopardise their hold on the world.

It happens in simple ways.

I remember once searching for my yellow wallet – forgetting that I had just purchased a much darker and smaller one. As I rushed around the flat in a frenzy of focus, my gaze passed over my new darker wallet several times! Because my mind was so occupied searching for a YELLOW wallet, I did not register the input of other.

When you study Alexander's discovery, you encounter his quaint "debauched kinaesthesia" concept. (No, it's not how you feel after a night out on the town – that's called debauched living.)

Olympic divers, for example, must calibrate spatially in a consistent manner to remain accurate in their graceful movements. Like musicians who practise scales, our ability to be sensorially accurate is capricious.

One day we are precise, the next we are way off.

Are you a top-down kind of person?

Think about this – develop into more of an Up-Lift kind of person. Which means paying more attention to inputs, rather than outputting all the time.

Like in conversations.

How soon do you start replying when listening to an alternate point of view?

Exactly.

Face it – you're top-heavy like everyone else. You're built that way honey.

Which is one reason why BodyChance teachers are trained to touch, and trained to help you wake up to your inputs. The hands touch to give you guidance – developing your confidence to move differently from your heavy top-down bias. We're going to help you wheedle out some of that sensory debauchery that Alexander was so insistent about.

The Touch of your teacher is something you will never forget.

And mine are pretty good – that happens after practicing more than 40 years. Come along to Golden Week and find out for your Self!
