Jun 22, 2013Niche is such a detailed subject, I have been devoting more time to blogging about that, rather than sharing some of the inspirational stories I have been receiving from teachers who are getting on with building their businesses. Today I have two reports to share. First from Jennifer, who was one of the earliest teachers who submitted her 12 Point Plan for a case study. You can read Part One here, and Part Two here, and her reply to my messages here. I asked her to catch us up with what's been going on since, this is her reply…

I've been a very busy person since the review of my business last year. I have a new website, which I'm still tweaking to make it as good as I want and need. Because I realized I was still afraid of committing to my ideas on who I most like and want to work with, I tried running two niched courses, one on AT for the office, and one on performance skills. I quickly discovered that I enjoy the performance skills course much more, and that my students there are both more numerous and more committed. The course I'm running at the moment is a beta version - I'll be tweaking it and adjusting it, and then rolling it out in a more comprehensive professional version later in the year. I also have an e-book related to the subject that I plan on releasing this year. The biggest change is my preparedness to try things. The AT for the office course, for example, was a great experiment, and I was happy to risk it being a disaster because it was going to teach me about what to try next. I still need to be more intentional about my business metrics and my marketing, but just at present I am so busy doing research and CPD for my presentation course that anything else takes a back seat! *** The other teacher is Eve Bernfeld, who only start following my blog in April, but went straight into implementing ideas. Recently, I sent out a request on my mailing list for any stories and Eve just sent this in…

It just occurred to me that already since I became a member of your site in April I've made a lot of changes. I figured I'd send a few updates to my very lengthy (sorry!) story: 1) I've moved my practice into a new space. Hallelujah! I'm in a wellness center that includes, among other things, a Midwifery Clinic (my niche!). It's in a better location than my house too. 2) I've been blogging. I seem to have a lot to say. 3) I've started an e-newsletter. 4) I've been meeting lots of people in the pregnancy/birth/infertility community and making more and more connections. 5) I attended a women's business seminar yesterday and am doing a home study business course for solo entrepreneurs (in addition to reading tons of books and some blogs). May do another business course in the fall through the amazing organization that hosted yesterday's seminar. Their mission is to support people starting businesses here in Portland and achieving financial stability. 6) I've begun to think of myself as an entrepreneur and a business-person, something that never really occurred to me before, but is key, if I'm going to meet my goal of supporting myself through teaching the Alexander Technique. I still have a to-do list a mile long, which increases every day as I learn more. Thanks for the inspiration! Eve
