What Kind of Wretched School is This?!

New students at a BodyChance class have been known to complain.

"These teachers don't plan their classes!" is one refrain.

"I never know what's going to be taught!" says another.

And it's true – from a conventional academic point-of-view – that BodyChance classes do not follow the standard method of "information dumping." 

You know the drill:

1. The teacher drones on and on about a subject he is expert on;
2. The students bury their faces in notebooks making memos;
3. The students will probably never reread their notes (unless there is an exam to force them).

The whole process could be done equally well on video – why bother having a live class if the teacher is just going to talk all the time?

When a student expects this kind of learning, BodyChance will disappoint as should any Alexander training.

BodyChance does have this kind of academic learning - but we don't waste our precious class time with teachers talking all the time. BodyChance offers an extensive Online Course – BodyThinking and ThinkingBody – and a discursive book course on the old man's writings. 

It's all part of our Pro education. Students are free to watch and study these videos at their own pace. For the Book Course, each book is divided into 2 x 3-month courses, which can be studied at any time. Trainees must complete four of these courses to qualify as BodyChance Teachers.

But all Alexander live learning is different.


At BodyChance, we strive to present something fresh, something new in every class. This way is most likely a radical departure from your experience of classroom learning in high school.

When a teacher walks into a BodyChance class - they are not unprepared at all – in fact – they are prepared for anything!

Because the student drives the content of every lesson. 

Alexander's Discovery is about the unique way each person manages their own coordination. It is based on Alexander's Postural Discovery that your head/spinal relationship calibrates how every other system works. Breathing, digestion - even cognitive processes and awareness - are all dependent upon the quality of your coordination in each moment.

You study the condition of your coordination by exploring movement activities.

Each student has the responsibility to come up with an idea of a movement they do in everyday life. This activity can be as simple as walking or as complex as playing Liszt's Campanella. It can be talking with your mother on the phone or going for a new job interview. It can be doing a back-bend or practising your daily Radio Exercises.

Whatever you choose, your teacher must be prepared to:

- gather information about your activity (even they have not seen it before);
- analyse it mechanically, cognitively and emotionally (if necessary);
- propose new information that will help you do it (this part is academic)
- use their touch to communicate a new protocol of movement (unique to Alexander);
- devise a fresh movement plan that guarantees success (we also call it a Yes Plan).

All this takes a lot of skill and patience on the side of the BodyChance teacher!

To be a student of Alexander's Discovery requires you to know only that information that is immediately relevant to you. To be a teacher of Alexander's Discovery requires you to identify all the peculiarities and mapping errors of everyone!
