When the Right Thing is the Wrong Thing
Sep 11, 2017Alexander said it first:
" When people are wrong, the thing which is right is bound to be wrong to them."
BUT WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?
In trying to build an secure, thriving, teaching practice, the world is populated by unlimited numbers of teachers, all doing what they believe to be the right thing…
And getting it wrong.
To be fair - not only "teachers" - but in almost any business context, this is true. There's a good reason why far more small businesses fail, than succeed. The attrition rate is shocking.
So are all these people deliberately doing the wrong thing? Are they trying to fail?
Of course not.
When leads us to the inevitable conclusion: they are doing what they think is right, and getting it wrong. How else do you interpret their failure?
So what are you doing that you think is right?
Here's some examples of rightfully inspired wrong ideas, that DON'T build your practice:
- Thinking you have to become a better teacher first.
Well, if THAT were true, how did John Wayne ever succeed as an actor?
Talk about terrible acting - he defined the insult "wooden actor". Didn't stop him from succeeding though, did it? And I am sure you know a good many "lousy" teachers, who are doing very well financially. No, being a better teacher is not necessary to succeed.
- Thinking you are a good teacher, but just no good at marketing or sales.
Well, if THAT were true, then you are not a good teacher. Sorry.
WHY?
Because convincing students to stop endgaining and pay attention to the process, takes A LOT of skill. If you teach well, it means you know how to market and sell new ideas. No, being clear now about marketing and sales is not necessary to succeed.
- Believing you hate Facebook, websites and the modern internet.
Well, if that were true, why do you even use a phone? Or a computer?
If you want to be a Luddite, then choose another profession. You can't go in two directions at the same time. You somehow managed to master the phone, the radio, your TV, even a computer. Grow up. Stop being a baby. Stop making excuses.
Learn.
It's called "Constructive Conscious Control of the Use of the Self" in order to get what you want - or did you forget that?

These are just three compelling "rights" that send teachers in the "wrong" direction; and they are common ideas amongst the hundreds of teachers I have coached over the last 7 years.
In ATSuccess, the best way to inhibit a wrong biz idea is the replace it with a right one. Your right biz idea will have an inhibited no embedded inside - as I emailed a few days ago.
So what are all these "right" ideas you adopt to replace your current thinking?
Well that - dear reader - is exactly what you will find out when you join me in October for what could be my last hand-holding support feast for teachers serious about improving their Alexander lot in life…
