Worry About the Worrier

Mar 03, 2018

When thinking of working in corporations, you should worry about the worrier.

Let me explain.

I have had good experiences with HR departments - mostly followed by bad ones.

(HR is Human Resources for the neophytes out there.)

HR people are magicians - offering you a flurry of smiles, handshakes and quick movements until they do their disappearing act. Anyone who has pursued corporate work in the past knows what I am talking about.

They suddenly stop responding.

Calls not returned, your increasingly frantic emails not answered - what did I do wrong?

Please - send me your stories and tell me I am not right.

HR Departments remind me of Professional Societies which - as GBS declared - "…are conspiracies against the laity." HR Departments similarly are conspiracies against the workers.

Professional Societies love to declare they are there to "protect the public" and "ensure standards" when mostly what they are doing is protecting their members. They block reform, make up arcane rules and tightly guard the power to change by keeping others out.

HR Departments love to declare they are there to "protect the workers" and "ensure standards" when mostly what they are doing is protecting their company against claims, damages and risks of non-compliance and litigation.

Understand this: HR departments are primarily a fortress established by companies to shut down dissent, ensure compliance and avoid litigation.

You must position yourself as their intimidator, not be the intimidated.

Positioning themselves to be intimidated is one of the biggest mistakes most naïve Alexscovery teachers make when they first dip their toes into the tsunami of corporate power.

It wastes a lot of your time.

What should you do? How should you proceed?

WORRY ABOUT THE WORRIER!

And THAT - dear possum - is one of many topics we will be exploring together in my upcoming workshop in London.

And later online.

There is a way, and it's not what most teachers are doing.
