You Are Not Your Enemy
Jan 30, 2020I read and listen to a lot of other writers in my field.
One of the best at the moment is the talented Peter Jacobson, who has managed to build the world's largest online Alexscovery school, with a viable ground plan across two continents.
A visionary guy with a mission to help musicians.
I talk about him because he sent out a curious email this morning with the title:
"Your Tongue is not a Bond Villain."
He touched upon a subject which I first explored with my grand and wise teacher, Marjory Barstow. I was complaining to Marj about a problem I had, and started to say:
"The back -"
And I got no further.
"Whose back?" Marj demanded.
I flushed a little and meekly replied...
"My back."
Marj smiled, then twinkled that way she did when she wanted you to think about what you had just said.
What I had just said was the beginning of making my back a Bond Villain, just as Peter wrote in his communication this morning about singing tongues.
You avoid claiming your trouble-makers as your own.
In English, we replace the possessive pronoun 'my' with the impersonal article 'the'.
I am not sure how it works in other languages, but the principle is this: divorcing ownership of a part of your own body – your back or tongue for example - then setting up the back or tongue as a villain determined to make your life miserable.
We say things like "I have a sore neck" when more truthfully we need to say "I am a sore neck". Taking ownership and responsibility for what is happening to our bodies is the first step towards freedom.
It is the truth that sets you free.
Alexscovery teachers can understand this brilliantly, then fail to make the connection between that and responsibility for practices.
Because if your practice is not attracting enough students:
- it is not the problem of where you are
- it is not the competition of other methods
- it is not the poverty of people increasing
- it is not the flippancy of people to commit.
Sure, all of those things may be right, but they are not the truth.
In every place, in every society, in every situation – there are successful people relative to the standard of your location. Which means – you can be one of those.
You need first to take the step to say "Yes I can."
Sure – your situation may be difficult, but every situation is what it is. You – and only you – have the power to make it something different.
That's the foundation of ATSuccess Foundations course – based on FM's idea of self-responsibility. There are things you can do; there are ways to be successful.
