[Congress 25-5] The Boomers Are Busted • ベビーブーマーはもう終わった

Imagine it – a line of old, white boomer (wo)men looking out to the auditorium, speaking into the question: “What is the Future of AT?”

“Aren’t those guys already close to the end?” did someone whisper?

How about: “What is the Past of AT?”

Turns out, a lot of old stories were told.

When folks realised that Boomer + Future doesn’t mix well, it was hurriedly decided: tomorrow, the stage panel will be all young people! Next day they came, so many of them. The Genzenners, Millennials, Xers – hey, there was even a Gen Alpha playing by the door. Our young leaders strided onto the stage - see pic above - and immediately set about shifting the furniture…

Please all stand and move to another chair - find new people!

On one side, teachers of 15 years or more – move!

On the other side, teachers with less than 15 years teaching – move!

Wait.

Each side was further sliced down into small groups of 3 or 4 people, with at least one mentor among them. Turns out, there were far more teachers with less than 15 years (see, they think of the future!) - than teachers with 15+ (where were they all?). As I have 45 years of teaching up my sleeve, I found my Self within a group that Camille and Rachel named:

“Moving Forward (&up)”
with Rachel, Camille, Diana, Teresa and Jeremy.

We haven’t done much – I just texted WhatsApp asking their permission to publish their first names as I did above. Obviously, they approved.

Maybe this (sometimes) Daily will jolt us into a little action? But what I don’t know…

One of my key takeaways came from seeing an increase in the number of “How to attract…” type workshops, of which I delivered one: 12-Step ATSuccess plan via 7 individual hotseats. It was fun and sometimes transformational. I realised how much I have learnt in personally mentoring hundreds of teachers, while building BodyChance in Japan with over 140 simultaneously in training at its peak.

I decided to prepare for Congress 2029 by creating an ATSuccess book with 4 chapters each on how to Choose, Build, and Sustain a Successful Practice. I hope this becomes a textbook for training schools. Students need to plan their practice – not from the day they qualify, but from the day they start training!

Michael Mah certainly shone as a member of the emerging generational influencers in our midst. There were several on the panel – all delightful in their own way, including ex-coder Gordon, who said dark things, then at one point mentioned: “I’m sorry to be the black cloud here.”

Later he left the stage, never to return!

Michael explained the sorrowful tale of Wikipedia, where squabbling Alexander teachers managed to lose their authority to Edit the Alexander Technique page, since they kept ‘besting’ each other with alternate definitions of “inhibition” etc. Something like this - dreadful.

Because of this, a group of Fringe Editor madmen now have Editorial control of the Alexander Technique Page on Wikipedia - they are intent on discrediting AT and causing it to fall. Michael has a plan to wrest back control, but it will be costly. He needs USD$12,000 to implement a long-term plan to restore the Wikipedia Page to properly reflect our work. (Don’t tell Peter Nobes.)

Michael is coordinating ATC (AT Canada) and AmSAT in collaborating with the SRG (STAT Research Group) to make changes on Wikipedia. They have found a professional Wikipedia consulting company that specialises in handling controversial page content. They now have a contract, but first they need the lolly!

Later, I attended Michael’s social media session, along with many others, and he brilliantly led us through Instagram, offering hints on how to use it to share our work with others. In general, all the younger members at the Congress lamented the lack of social media on Alexander. In Japan, during BodyChance training, my trainees were required to write blogs and explore the ways they communicated the work with others as an integrated part of their training plan. Training Directors take note: speaking or writing about our work is something trainees can be practising from the very get-go, so why not encourage a weekly <whatever> so their learning experiences make it into social media?

When I was a trainee in London in 1970s, Duncan Woodcock and I formed YAAO – Yet Another Alexander Organisation – with the express purpose of meeting other trainees from other lineages and figuring out why we were supposed to hate each other? Interestingly, many senior teachers came to talk to YAAO, including Marjory Barlow. But they all had a strict condition…

“NO TEACHERS”

Maybe it’s time for YAAO again?

This time, trainees – NO TEACHERS - could gather together to focus on social media, compare notes, coordinate themes and campaigns. Geography is gone – anyone, anywhere can participate. If it were “trainees only”, there’d be no commercial pressure. Leads could go to Alexander cooperatives, rather than individuals.

Maybe I’ll suggest this to my WhatsApp group?

How to raise money for a group like this is another question – maybe Moniker has an idea?

Anyway, that’s our youth at the Congress. It was refreshing and full of hope to see their enthusiasm, slight snarkiness (boomers be damned!) coupled with a strong advocacy for change.

想像してみてください――年配の白人ブーマー（男女）が舞台に並び、観客を見つめながら問いかけています。
「ATの未来とは何か？」

「もうすぐ終わりじゃないの？」と誰かがささやいた。

じゃあ、「ATの過去とは何か？」はどう？

結局、多くの古い話が語られました。

ブーマーと未来は相性が悪いと気づかれたとき、急遽決定が下されました。明日のパネルは若者だけ！
そして翌日、本当にたくさんの若者がやって来ました。ジェネZ世代、ミレニアル世代、X世代――さらにはドアの近くに遊んでいるアルファ世代まで。若きリーダーたちは舞台に上がるや否や家具を動かし始めました…

「さあ、立って別の椅子に移動してください――新しい人を見つけて！」

「こちら側、教師歴15年以上の人は移動！」

「反対側、教師歴15年未満の人は移動！」

待った。

さらにそれぞれ3〜4人の小グループに分けられ、少なくとも1人のメンターが入りました。結果的に、15年未満の教師（彼らこそ未来を考えている！）の方が圧倒的に多く、15年以上の教師は少数派（みんなどこへ行った？）。私は45年の教師歴があるので、カミーユとレイチェルが名付けたグループに入りました。

まだ何もしていません――ただ、名前を公開していいかWhatsAppで確認しただけです。もちろん、みんな承認してくれました。

この（時々）デイリーが、少し行動を起こすきっかけになるかも？でも、何をするかはまだわかりません…

私の大きな学びのひとつは、「どうやって集客するか」系のワークショップが増えていたことでした。私自身も一つ担当しました。「ATSuccessの12ステップ計画」を7つのホットシートで。楽しく、ときに変容的な体験でした。私はこれまでに数百人の教師を個別に指導し、日本でBodyChanceを築き上げ、ピーク時には同時に140人以上が在籍していた経験から、多くを学んだのだと気づきました。

そこで2029年のコングレスに向けて、「ATSuccess本」を作ることにしました。4章ごとに「選ぶ」「築く」「持続させる」について書き、成功する実践の教科書にしたいのです。訓練生たちは、卒業した日からではなく、訓練を始めた日から自分の実践を計画すべきだからです！

マイケル・マーは、新しい世代の影響力ある存在として輝いていました。パネルには他にも個性豊かな若者がいて、元プログラマーのゴードンは暗い発言を連発し、ついには「自分が黒い雲でごめん」と言ったあと、舞台を去り戻ってきませんでした。

マイケルはWikipediaでの悲しい出来事を説明しました。アレクサンダー教師たちが「抑制」などの定義をめぐって論争を繰り返すうちに、アレクサンダー・テクニークのページの編集権を失ってしまったのです。その結果、ATを貶めようとする一部の過激な編集者たちに支配されることになりました。ひどい話です。

マイケルはこの状況を取り戻す計画を持っていますが、費用がかかります。実行するには12,000ドルが必要です。ATC（カナダ）とAmSATがSRG（STAT Research Group）と協力し、論争の多いページを扱う専門のWikipediaコンサル会社と契約を結びました。ただしまず資金が必要です！

その後、マイケルのSNSセッションに出席しました。彼はインスタグラムの使い方を巧みに解説し、どうやって私たちの活動を伝えるかヒントを与えてくれました。コングレスに参加した若い世代の多くは、ATのソーシャルメディア発信の少なさを嘆いていました。日本のBodyChanceでは、訓練生にブログを書かせたり、自分の学びをどう伝えるか探求させたりするのを訓練計画に組み込んでいました。

訓練ディレクターの方々へ：話すことや書くことは、訓練初期からでもできる学習です。毎週SNSに投稿するような仕組みを導入してはどうでしょうか？

もしかして、YAAOをもう一度やる時期かもしれません。

今度は「訓練生だけ」で集まり、SNSに集中し、情報を共有し、テーマやキャンペーンを協力して展開する。地理的制約はもう存在しません。商業的な圧力もなくなります。見込み客は個人ではなく、AT協同組合へ回すこともできます。

これをWhatsAppグループに提案してみようかな？

お金の集め方はまた別の問題――モニカーにアイデアがあるかも？

とにかく、今回のコングレスで若者たちの姿を見るのは新鮮で、希望に満ちていました。ちょっとした皮肉（ブーマーなんて関係ない！）と変革への強い意欲が印象的でした。
