Getting People Sold On You, Without Selling Your Self

Sep 14, 2017

Six years ago, as I was starting out with ATSuccess, I had a long, passionate letter from a teacher in Europe.

The writer took time to establish credentials as a top-tier salesperson, with years of experience in marketing and sales, handling multi-million dollar, international deals. You would think this person a natural to move into being a professional teacher and utilize those skills marketing and selling Alexander Technique, right?

No. That was the point of the letter.

Although selling objects and “things” came easily, selling Alexander Technique seemed impossible. Why?

Fundamentally I think it is a misconception: you think you are selling your Self. For years I felt just like that. At first glance it seems obviously true: you have a set of skills, and depending on how well you use those skills, will depend on how well your student learns.

Sounds reasonable right?

Only problem is - it isn’t true.

The work isn't about you or me - it's bigger than both of us, and the truth that carries it is ultimately stronger than any one individual. There are teachers who try to be gurus, stars, and the rest. Although I huff and puff - and I got to be well known - I avoided organizing my school around this idea.

Instead, at BodyChance I deliberately and consciously set out to make the work the star, and destroy the myth of the all-knowing Director. BodyChance offers trainees multiple models, and there is constant discussion about various teaching methodologies.

You are not selling you. You are selling the work. And the work works - you don't need to have insecurities or doubts about your Self anymore. Trust the work, it will see you through. Have confidence in THAT.

That's one point we get clear on during my October course - what you are selling. Consider joining; it could be my last.
