Grace Lays Down the Digital Law
Jun 24, 2018My youngest daughter Grace – when she was 14 – was chatting with me about her future.
Telling me how much she loves YouTube, and maybe she wants to become a “YouTuber”. YouTubers are famous in her world – Vegans, Yoginis, Gay boys: teenage voyagers coming of age in the digital spotlight. Like my daughter.
I don’t know why, but suddenly I asked her:
“How do you for search things?”
YouTube of course.
“No” – I said, thinking she didn’t understand my question – “I mean, when your wanting to find out information?”
YouTube – have you got ears?
“So you never use google?”
dad… (her eyes looking up) google OWNS YouTube!
You can’t win with a teenager. Turns out, she’s right.
YouTube is the world’s second largest search engine – 3 billion searches a month.
And last Saturday – at my the first of my two Art of Teaching Groups workshops - I put this insight to good use. As I was about to explain a point, one of the participants blurted out:
Are you going to give us notes?
(Immediately I thought of Grace, YouTube and how information is dispensed these days.)
“Can I video a summary for you?”
There was immediate agreement and this is the result:
(except it's not on YouTube, it's on Facebook)

The insight here is not about YouTube, it’s about people. How they gather information these days on tiny mobile devices not suited to text entries.
Notice how emoticons are taking over?
