This is So Simple, It's Shocking
Jul 12, 2018My subject line today is a pithy comment made by my venerable teacher, Marjorie Barstow.
Marj was already 86 years old when I met her, with a sparkle in her eye and a humble humour. He comment about Alexander's discovery – that it is so simple, it is shocking – was spoken to a student who was trying to say that Alexander work was difficult to understand.
This difficulty is a common experience people have, but Marj would have none of it.
Alexander’s discovery was - in Marj's opinion – a little bit of nothing:
"All you will get is the absence of what you had."
What is difficult to understand is the coterie of invasive, disruptive behaviours that you have developed over years and years of watching others, and by worrying about too many things too often until you start going crazy and spiraling into depression.
"It's your old habits that make it hard." Marj told the student.
Indeed, Alexander's discovery is simple. At any time, you are doing one of two things:
1. With fear you are posturally compressing your whole Self;
2. In love, you are posturally expanding your whole Self.
You cannot do both at the same time.
Buddhism defines fear as an adventitious emotion – something we introduce into our behaviour that does not belong there. Anger, depression, sadness, aversion, anxiety – these are all mind trips we create when the world doesn't behave in the way we want.
In every instance – without exception – we express these emotions physically.
We "posturise" them.
Alternatively, love is defined as inherent to our being – children show it best. With their default state of unconditional loving and joy, children teach us the truth of who we are. Freedom and happiness – these are emotions that are natural to us. We feel closer to our Self when we experience these feelings.
Love – and fear – are both expressed through Posture. Fear causes us to tighten head to spine; love gives us the freedom to expand. As Marj said:
"It's so simple, it's shocking."
The puzzle is how to expand when you want to shrink; how to love when you only feel hate; how to be joyful when you are weighed down by depression?
Alexander discovered that all of these emotions have at their heart a postural movement between head and spine. Through this discovery, he found that posture is a door into transformation.
Posture is concrete, easily influenced by thinking, and simple to understand.
