Then who?

It’s a puzzling question with many speculative answers: God, Nature, Higher Power, Buddhahood, Climate Change or nothing and no one at all. But even ‘no one’ is a kind of ‘something’ – that viewpoint is less atheistic than it is Buddhist, who declare that there was no beginning and there will be no end. It was and always will be.
Who really knows?
On a starry, starry night, you can look up and today know you are facing not hundreds, not thousands, not millions, not even billions — but some two trillion galaxies. So many, in fact, that time itself cannot show us them all: some of these galaxies are receding faster than light — forever beyond the reach of even our precious Hubble telescope to see. Isn’t this a mystery to you? It certainly is to me.
And one of the biggest mysteries of all is (wait for it) – YOU.
The human brain is the most complex object known in our universe. If you were to lay out the fibres that link up our neurons, they would stretch for 2.5 million kilometres. You could wrap them around the Earth 60 times. Did you realise you carry so many fibres? The various ways these fibres can be wired – the connectome – potentially exceeds the number of atoms in the universe. I could go on, but you’re getting the idea, right?
So how did we arrive at this moment?
Human evolution – i.e. life on earth – started around 4 billion years ago. The universe is believed to have existed for 13.8 billion years. Therefore, for 30% of that time, the human brain was in development. That’s quite a long time – but given the complexity of the human brain, quite understandable.
However, it wasn’t until some 500 million years ago – during the Cambrian explosion of life - that the first recognisable ancestor of our human brain first appeared. We belong to the Phylum Chordata, which includes dinosaurs, fish, reptiles, marsupials, birds, and, of course, mammals.
A special feature of the Chordata – although not exclusive to it – is a common orientation in space. There is a back side (dorsal) and belly side (ventral) as well as a top end (anterior) and and a bottom end (posterior). This is significant because it orients all movement in relation to gravity: our food enters the mouth at the top and exits the anus at the bottom.
The mouth leads, the anus follows.
This is why the top – our embodied brain – is also the location of a plethora of sensing abilities: seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling, tasting and experiencing others through mirror neurons in the brain. All there to serve your movement. This top area serves as a control centre, an administrative nexus responsible for movement, as it has been since its initial development some 500 million years ago.
This was F.M. Alexander’s first discovery.
Movement is oriented from the top – governance flows down from there.
The mechanisms that govern this flow of postural coordination are as complex as the brain itself, with roots stretching back to the earliest members of Phylum Chordata. During the ten years FM Alexander spent observing his movement in three mirrors, he gradually uncovered what appeared to be an ancient system — a deeply embedded operating system that oriented his movement for coordination. This system, largely subcortical and centered around brainstem structures, operated below conscious awareness. Its evolutionary age and unconscious operation presented a challenge: it took Alexander many years to discover how to consciously influence a system that had evolved precisely not to require conscious control.
Now, this optimisation system is in crisis.
Without realising it, we inadvertently hinder this ancient ability of ours from serving the function it was designed to perform. Alexander lessons set about to restore this system – to restore your ancient ability to optimise your movements. Teachers do this by:
1. Learning how to restore the optimisation within their own system over 3-7 years; then
2. Using their touch to trigger the same result in you – while also describing it in words.
When an Alexander teacher touches you, they are touching a thing that took 30% of the life of the universe to evolve.
It truly is the Touch of God.
